We made 2 cruises to Ireland, one in 2003 when we circumnavigated Ireland; and again in 2009 when we revisited the wild west coast as far as Clew Bay near Achill Head. It is dramatic, and can be fierce – we were once weatherbound in Dingle for 8 days, and on another occasion we went 21 days without going alongside – because there was nowhere to go alongside!
Glengariff (at the head of Bantry Bay) , where the Irish Cruising Club was formed must be one of the most secure and beautiful harbours in Europe
But you must be ready to accept that Irish thinking is “other”. One of our trips was at about the time of the BSE problem in UK. There were strict instructions at Kinsale that general rubbish should go in the red skip, and galley waste in the white skip. I was chatting with the harbourmaster, and pointed that there wasn’t a white skip. His reply was “There is: There is! But this week it is red”.
In 2009, the Irish authorities were very hot on waste disposal, and it was a major (and expensive) problem. At one stage I was relieved to be able to dispose of a single black dustbin size black sack of waste for 10 euros. I reported the problem to RYA and they were taking it up with their counterparts in Ireland. I do not know the outcome.
One strange aspect is that there is very little tidal stream data north od Dingle (the charts have no tidal diamonds). These pilot books aim to geive he best available data at the time of publication,
